Movie Review: X-Men: Days of Future Past

So I finally managed to see the movie, X-Men: Days of Future Past and it was a breath of fresh air compared to most of the lame movies I’ve been seeing so far in 2014. However, as great as this movie was I am still left with many unanswered questions my Marvel Comics friends may just be able to answer. But in the meanwhile I’ll share my views and my interpretations of this great movie I used to love to call X-Men 4 seeing as how it’s the first film to star most of the original cast from the year 2000 and the next film in the timeline to X-Men: The Last Stand not withstanding X-Men: First Class.

Essentially it’s about sentinels which have run amok in the city of New York not so far into the future and they are targeting mutants like Bishop, Colossus, Shadowcat and more. The group manages to hold them off and the strategy for keeping them at bay is simple. Kitty would use Bishop’s consciousness to project into his past selves, maybe a few days of weeks in the past to warn him and by extension the others about attacks on mutants. This would cause much of the danger and bloodshed from being carried out.

Eventually Wolverine and Charles decide to use Logan to project his consciousness into the Logan of 1973 to help him reach Xavier to stop Mystique from killing the scientist who created sentinels from causing more mutants wars. The prejudice would still continue but at least they wouldn’t all be dead at the hands of the sentinels of the not so distant future.

I noticed that Kitty Pride is still amazingly cute played by Ellen Page who has now come out as a lesbian. Matters not, the world is getting more and more liberal and people seem to be getting with the changing times. To me it’s a bit weird but ten years from now it will be the norm. A bit freaky though but I don’t judge. Anyway the action was amazing and although I couldn’t identify some of the mutants in this movie by name I still think they’re quite awesome and their powers are cool especially the one in a purple outfit who can shoot portals. That’s awesome!

Wolverine’s claws are not adamantium in 1973 but seem like some kind of hard substance that can still pierce and claw with extreme ferocity. I guess in 1973 he wasn’t given his adamantium skeleton or maybe he did. I have not watched X-Men Origins: Wolverine in a long time and I still haven’t watched The Wolverine so I am a bit behind on my X-Men knowledge. Things were so much easier to understand in the 1990s animated series. Shadowcat, Storm, Magneto and the others died in the events of the dual timelines of 1973 to the not so distant future but because Mystique had a change of heart and didn’t kill the inventor of the sentinels things changed and a new timeline was forged.

I saw president Nixon in this film as is fitting as he was the president of the U.S.A. at that time. Awesome piece of factual history that Marvel chose to go with. We briefly saw Jean, Scott and Rogue at the end of this movie which was great because they are a part of the team and I hear this is the last time the actors who portray them will do so as in the next X-Men movie the characters will be played by younger actors, minus Wolverine and Charles. Quite fitting as they first started playing these characters in 2000, a full fourteen years ago. Can’t wait for X-Men: Apocalypse in 2016. That’s gonna be a great year for movies!
